Russian New Year’s pictures

The snow maiden gives treats to guests

The Russian New Year’s Eve celebration, sponsored by Friends of Sacred Landmarks Initiative, was a huge success! Many people came to dine, dance and celebrate into the night. The music was provided by Harmonia, who played a variety of music from the heart of Europe throughout the evening. An excellent Russian-inspired meal was prepared by Executive Chef Eric Petrus of LCCC Dining Services. Many guests took part in the dance lessons offered during the evening, and a great time was had by all.

President of LCCC Dr. Roy Church, previous Director of SLI Cheryl Piper, President of FSLI Dia Dobos, Director of SLI Jackie Kokai and Dr. Michael Tevesz attended the event.

On June 21, 2011, the Lorain County Sacred Landmarks Initiative held a book launch to celebrate the release of its latest publication, Celebrations of Light: Ecclesiastical Stained Glass in Lorain County, Ohio. The event was hosted by Commodore Books & More on the Lorain County Community College main campus. The event also celebrated the ten years that SLI has been in operation. Displays were set up to commemorate the events of the past ten years, and copies of the latest publication were available for purchase. Oral History Project update

The Oral History Project is rolling along. Contact is being made with churches for the initial stage of the project.

In the first stage, 10 interviews will be conducted at five Lorain County houses of worship, two from each location. Our volunteer team leaders will be conducting these interviews, and the knowledge and experience gained from these sessions will be used to shape the project moving forward.

We are looking into having larger teams of volunteers cover more worship centers beginning next year, and are tentatively planning a strategy meeting sometime after January to discuss this possibility. Ideally, as many houses of worship as possible will be interviewed, though priority will go to the ones deemed essential by the volunteer team leader group, led by Jacki Kokai, director of the Lorain County Sacred Landmarks Initiative.

We’ve arranged ten interviews, and have started the transcription process. Several interviews have already been transcribed. With funding from the Community Foundation of Lorain County, we’ve been able to make an excellent start on what will be a multi-year project.

Oral History Project

Lorain County Sacred Landmarks InitiativeThe Lorain County Sacred Landmarks Initiative is proud to announce the Oral History Project, funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Lorain County. The goal of the project is to collect and preserve the histories of local houses of worship in audio, video and transcribed form. At the conclusion of the project, the histories collected will be available on the Sacred Landmarks Initiative website.

The project is set to begin this June. Volunteers will be formed into teams, trained and sent out to gather stories in the community. There are many ways in which volunteers can help with this project. Aside from story collection teams, there will also be a need for volunteers to help provide office support, technical support and other tasks related to the project.

Representatives from houses of worship are encouraged to contact the Lorain County Sacred Landmarks Initiative to schedule an appointment to have their history recorded. Questions will be provided to those being interviewed in advance. Any houses of worship that have already collected oral histories are welcome to include them in this project
